South Uist Camping and Hostel

Location Print E-mail

The Gleanndal Hostel is owned by well known Gaelic singer Paul McCallum and is situated in the beautiful and historic village of North Glendale which lies on the rugged South Eastern shore of *South Uist.

The village is known as the Glen of Muses and the language, culture and music of the Island is still kept alive by the proprietor and his neighbours.

We are on the shore of a sea loch, so you will have a great opportunity for a bit of seal and otter spotting, this whole area is abundant in wildlife.

To find out more about local walks visit the South Uist page on the Walk Highlands web site.

South Uist Beach

The beautiful white sandy beaches of the Eastern shore are only two miles away, bordered by stunning machair dunelands covered in wildflowers and are abundant with birdlife. The Uists hold breeding bird populations of international importance, including Hen Harriers, Eagles and Phalarope. A Snowy Owl is a regular visitor to the Uists!

Beside the beach is also the famous 18 hole Askernish Golf Course which was orginally laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1891 and which has recently been lovingly restored.

Caledonian MacBrayne run a ferry service which sails from Oban to Lochboisdale on a daily basis. Lochboisdale is only 5 miles away and provides us with a variety of services including shops, post office, doctor and dentist surgeries, filling station, garage, bank and tourist information office.

There are also good hotels where you can enjoy good local food and taste the the music of the island.

*South Uist is one of the islands that of the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) archipelago, 70 miles off the North West of Scotland out in the Atlantic Ocean.
